57th Atomic-scale Surface Designing for Functional Low-dimensional Materials
These Proceedings contain papers submitted at the Yamada Conference LVII “Atomic-scale surface designing for functional low-dimensional materials” held at National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, Japan, from November 14 to 16 in 2001. The conference was attended by 145 participants from more than 10 countries.
Recent progress in surface science has brought us a deep understanding of the structure and properties of clean and adsorbate covered surfaces. In the 21st century, the atomic-scale design of solid surfaces will be carried out in order to achieve specific new functions of various kinds, using accumulated knowledge of surface science as a basis. In the first year of the 21st century, an international conference dealing with such subjects was held. The LVII Yamada Conference was organized to exchange ideas between two fields, i.e., surface design and surface properties/functions, to introduce these two fields to one another, and to try to solve various problems in future nanometer-scale devices. Thus, the conference included rather broad fields from chemistry to physics and from fundamentals to applications.
It is our great pleasure to express many thanks to the Yamada Science Foundation for the financial support that made the conference possible and fruitful. Also we appreciate those whose efforts made this conference successful.
